ROWING TANK
THE FOUNDRY, CLEVELAND, OH

The Foundry is a community-based rowing organization located in a former foundry on the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland. The Foundry hired Peterson Architects, who worked with local firm Kaczmar Architects and Inriver Tank and Boat, to design an unusual rowing tank.

The very successful tank, constructed within one of the existing Foundry buildings, has two troughs configured like side-by-side conveyor belts. Rowers can use the row of stations between the troughs for sculling, or the outside stations for sweep rowing. It can thus accommodate up to 24 sweep rowers or 12 scullers at any time. The tank is designed so that rowing stations are located directly on the building’s floor slab, maximizing accessibility.
